Hello families! We were so busy last week that I didn't get to do a blog post! This post will cover both this week and next week.
Here's what's going on in school this week and next week: Language Arts: Students are finishing their opinion essays and they are due Friday. The unit 4 assessment on author's purpose will be Friday morning. Next week we will start out new unit, Technology's Impact on Society. This will be a three week unit and will be completed February 22nd. Math: We've been subtracting mixed numbers with unlike denominators using two strategies. We will wrap up this unit on Thursday. Check out the picture below! Social Studies/Science: The students designed a process to separate a mixture today and we will test out the designs tomorrow. Science test will be next week. ***If you're interested in being a chaperone for our field trip in May, let me know soon. There is some mandatory training required to attend** Important dates: January 31st: Math unit 4 assessment February 1st: Language Arts Unit 4 assessment February 1st: Oral Reading selection due February 13-15: Oral Reading Presentations February 18th: No school February 22nd: Language Arts Unit 5 assessment I don't know about all of you but I am loving this snow! Most of the kids seemed excited too. We had a great week full of lovely literature, fun fractions, and spectacular social studies! Here's what's going on next week: Language Arts: We will continue with unit 4, "Recognizing Author's Point of View." Some students are reading a novel and others are working on a couple of plays. Your child may mention that they need to make a prop or costume. No rush, we have a couple of weeks. The students are also learning about writing an opinion piece. Math: We've started unit 4, adding fractions with unlike denominators. We have worked hard on hand drawing fractions and understanding the relationships of fractions with unlike denominators. Here are a couple of pictures of a game we played called "Make a Whole!" Next week we will practice using fraction strips and drawings to solve addition and subtraction problems of fractions with unlike denominators. Social Studies: We researched the natural resources of the 113 colonies and created a map for our interactive notebooks.
I am developing our next project and should have the information ready to send home next week. Important Dates: January 21: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, No School January 24: End of 2nd quarter January 25: No school for students. Teacher work day. It was so wonderful to see the class this short week. We had a great time catching up, writing about the New Year and taking winter break surveys that we will use to make pie charts. We also started learning about early English Settlements in America, primarily Jamestown and Plymouth. We just started using an "interactive notebook" in Social Studies to help organize our notes. I've wanted to have one since the beginning of the year but couldn't find the perfect the resource. I finally found one over break! If your child has an unused composition book at home, they'll need to bring it in for this notebook. The students turned in their book reports and presented them to the class. I must say, I was very impressed at the hard work the students put into their projects. Here are just a few examples. I'll post more in a separate post soon! Here's what we're working on this week:
Language Arts: Unit 4 - Understanding Author's Point of View (POV). We will review what POV means and introduce writing an opinion piece. Math: Make a pie graph and review the purpose and parts of fractions to prepare for our next unit. Social Studies/Science: Using text evidence (from our textbook) and prior knowledge to infer. Practice map skill by creating a resource map of the 13 colonies. Important Dates: January 21: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, No School January 24: End of 2nd quarter January 25: No school for students. Teacher work day. |
